Bowing basement walls: soil pressure and how it's held back
A wall that is leaning inward is not a moisture problem with a structural side effect. It is a structural problem, and it is the one subject here where we tell you to stop reading and call someone.

Basement walls are designed to hold back soil. Soil pushes sideways, and how hard it pushes depends on what it's made of and how wet it is. Expansive clay that swells when it takes on water, or saturated ground with nowhere to drain, can load a wall well beyond what it was built for. The wall responds the way masonry does: it cracks horizontally, and it moves inward.
The signs are consistent. A horizontal crack partway up a block wall, often around the middle. Stair-step cracking at the corners. A wall that is visibly bowed when you sight along it, or that has moved at the top. Doors and windows on the floor above that no longer close the way they used to. Individually these can have other explanations; together they describe a wall under lateral load.
The repairs fall into recognizable families, and it helps to know what each is for before anyone quotes you. Carbon fiber straps bond to the inside face and are intended to stop further inward movement — they reinforce, they don't straighten. Wall anchors and helical tiebacks reach out into stable soil beyond the failing zone and pull against it, and in the right conditions can recover some movement over time. Steel or engineered bracing resists the load mechanically from inside. Piers — helical or push — are a different problem again: they address a foundation that is settling downward, not a wall being pushed sideways, and conflating the two is one of the most common misunderstandings in this whole field.
We describe these so that a proposal is legible to you, and that is the entire ambition of this section. We do not tell anyone how to reinforce a wall, we do not rank products, and we do not publish prices. The right sequence is an assessment by a licensed structural engineer who is independent of the contractor, then a specification, then quotes against that specification. Also worth saying plainly: excavating alongside a wall that is already failing can make it worse, which is not intuitive and is exactly why this is not a weekend project.
