Grading and downspouts: the two changes worth making first
A roof collects an enormous amount of water and concentrates it into a few points. Where those points discharge decides a great deal.
Before anyone excavates a foundation or installs a system inside, there is a question worth asking: is the house delivering its own rainwater to its own foundation? In a large share of wet basements, the answer is yes, and it is the cheapest problem in this entire subject to fix.
Why roof water dominates
A roof is a large, impermeable surface, and everything landing on it is funneled into a handful of downspouts. Each one is therefore a concentrated stream. Deliver that stream to the ground beside the wall and you are, several times a year, deliberately saturating the soil in exactly the place where saturated soil causes the most trouble — against the foundation, where it can seep in and where, in the worst case, it adds lateral pressure to the wall.
Downspouts: get the water away
A splash block stops erosion directly under the outlet. What it does not do is move water any meaningful distance — it puts it on the ground a foot or two from the wall, which is still the backfill zone, the most permeable soil around the house.
Extensions that carry discharge several feet out are the single highest-value change available here. Where they are inconvenient across a lawn, buried solid pipe carrying water to a suitable discharge point does the same job out of sight — with two cautions: solid pipe, not perforated, because perforated pipe releases the water as it goes; and it needs fall, and somewhere legitimate to discharge.
Also worth checking: whether the gutters are clearing at all. A blocked gutter overflows at the fascia and the water lands in a sheet directly at the foundation, which is worse than any downspout arrangement.
Grading: which way does the ground fall
Soil around a house should fall away from the walls for the first several feet. New houses are usually built that way. Then time passes: backfill settles, flower beds get built up against the wall, patios and paths get added, mulch accumulates year after year. Slowly the slope reverses, and now the ground is delivering surface water toward the building.
Checking it is straightforward — a level and a straight board, or simply watching where water runs during rain. Correcting it usually means adding soil against the foundation and grading it to fall away, and the useful detail is that it should be soil rather than a permeable layer: bark mulch holds water against the wall rather than shedding it.
Two things to keep in mind while doing it. Do not raise soil so high that it reaches siding or framing — there is a reason a foundation extends above grade. And around a slab or against a wall with any suspicion of structural movement, get advice before adding load.
Window wells
A window well is a container sunk below grade. If its drain is blocked or missing, it fills during heavy rain and the water sits against a window. Confirming this takes no equipment: look during a storm. A cover keeps roof splash and debris out and is one of the less expensive interventions available.
When the yard itself is the problem
Sometimes water is arriving from the site rather than the roof — a neighboring slope, a driveway shedding toward the house, ground that simply doesn't drain. The tools there belong to landscape drainage: a swale to redirect surface flow, a dry well to give water somewhere to sit and soak, a catch basin at a low point feeding a solid pipe. Why do this first
It is inexpensive, it is reversible, much of it is genuinely a homeowner job, and it addresses a genuinely common cause. And if you do it and the basement is still wet, you have not wasted the effort: you have established that the water is not arriving from the surface, which is real diagnostic progress and narrows what comes next.
